About BIOSAFE CABINET CLASS II

LASIN biosafety cabinet (BSC) is a critical piece of laboratory equipment designed as an enclosed, ventilated workspace to protect laboratory workers, the environment, and research materials from hazardous biological agents. They use HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters and directional airflow to provide containment.
How To Select The Right Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) For ...
Biosafety Cabinet Classes and Protection Levels
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classifies BSCs into three main classes, which offer increasing levels of protection.
Feature  Class I Class II Class III
Personnel Protection Yes Yes Yes (Maximum)
Product Protection No Yes Yes (Maximum)
Environmental Protection Yes Yes Yes (Maximum)
Airflow Direction Inward Downward laminar + inward Inward (gas-tight)
HEPA Filters Exhaust only Supply and exhaust Double exhaust or exhaust + incineration
Typical Use Level BSL-1, BSL-2, BSL-3 (aerosol-generating procedures) BSL-1 to BSL-3 BSL-1 to BSL-4 (highly infectious agents)
Chemical Use Small amounts with proper ventilation Type A: not suitable for volatile chemicals unless ducted; Type B: suitable for varying amounts of chemicals Yes (safe for use)
Types of Class II Cabinets
Class II cabinets are the most common in research and clinical laboratories and are further divided into types (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1) based on airflow and exhaust systems.
  • Type A2: Most common type, recirculates about 70% of the HEPA-filtered air to the work area and exhausts the remaining 30%. Can be used with minute amounts of volatile toxic chemicals if connected to the building exhaust with a canopy connection.
  • Type B1: Recirculates 30% of the air and exhausts 70% through a dedicated duct system. Work involving small amounts of chemicals should be performed in the rear of the cabinet.
  • Type B2: A "total exhaust" cabinet with no air recirculation. 100% of the air is exhausted to the outside, making it suitable for work involving volatile toxic chemicals or radionuclides in conjunction with biological agents. These are more expensive to operate due to energy inefficiency.
